June 25-26, 2016 - Gold Cup

Let's Go To The Races - June 25-26, 2016

The Gold Cup at Santa Anita, the Ohio Derby and a trio of 7- furlong sprints top the weekend's list of U.S. races.

On the international front, trainer Aidan O'Brien has four of the nine starters IRISH DERBY -- but maybe not the favorite. And Duramente will be looking for a dominant victory in Japan to ease the bruised egos left by A Shin Hikari's defeat at Royal Ascot.

A heavyweight field of 18 is set for Sunday's Grade I TAKARAZUKA KINEN at 2,200 meters over the Hanshin course. The group is headed by Duramente, second in the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan on World Cup night after losing a shoe and winner of the Grade II Nakayama Kinen the month before that. After the disappointment of A Shin Hikari's lackluster performance in the Group 1 Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot last week, Duramente could figure more prominently in Japan's international campaign during the rest of the year. June 18-19 - Fathers Day Weekend

Let's Go To The Races - June 18-19, 2016
This is a non-commercial blog

"Songbird flies again in Saturday's $200,000 Grade II Summertime Oaks. The undefeated filly missed the Kentucky Oaks after spiking a fever. She hasn't really been tested yet in winning all seven of her starts and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and jockey Mike Smith basically have given up finding enough superlatives to describe her. Her works indicate she's ready to go and, if so, six rivals will be competing for second-place money. Among those, Coppa is interesting as one to watch for the future after a pair of wins in as many starts. Actually, even if Songbird isn't quite up to her best, the others probably are still running for second.

"Effinex, runner-up to American Pharoah in last fall's Breeders' Cup Classic, classes up Saturday's $500,000 Grade I Stephen Foster against six rivals. The 5-year-old son of Mineshaft makes his first start since winning the Grade II Oaklawn Handicap April 16.

"Kentucky Derby third-place finisher Gun Runner resurfaces in Saturday's $100,000 Grade III Matt Winn at 1 1/16 miles on the dirt. The Candy Ride colt came into the Derby off a six-week layoff following his victory in the Louisiana Derby.

"Last year's Arlington Million winner, The Pizza Man, returns in Saturday's $200,000, Grade II Wise Dan at 1 1/16 miles on the lawn.

"Saturday's $300,000 Grade III Poker Stakes at Belmont Park is 1 mile on the turf and assumes added interest with the Tuesday's impressive Royal Ascot win by defending Breeders' Cup Mile champ Tepin and the prospect of trainer Andre Fabre sending another winner from that meeting, Usherette, to oppose her in November's renewal."  Read more at source

ROYAL HEROINE - TEPIN!
Tepin A Reminder of Why We Love Horse Racing
By Craig Bandoroff in June 16, 2016 TDN

"She is raced by a couple who have raced horses for over 30 years and truly understand the incredible gift they have received. It was a great sportsman’s challenge to take Tepin to Royal Ascot. That was acknowledged by everyone. I have never heard Robert or Joan in public or private ever say anything but “It’s about Tepin, we are merely her custodians.”

"But aren’t we all glad Robert and Joan stuck to their dream and their plan? I know in the last hundred yards when I saw her stride shorten, her head come up a touch and her ears go back even flatter on her head, that I was watching an elite athlete reach down a little deeper, a little further and seem to say to her worthy adversary, “not today big boy, not today.” It’s like she said to us all, you want to know why you love horses, why you love horse racing? Here’s why. Greatness doesn’t come around very often. That’s what’s so great about it." Read more at source

ANOTHER ROYAL HEROINE - LADY AURELIA!
Lady Aurelia romps in the Queen Mary - Stunning performance - Video
Lady Aurelia stuns Ascot in Queen Mary
"LADY AURELIA put up one of the most devastating displays seen in modern times at Royal Ascot when blitzing to seven-length win in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes.

"The US raider did not see any of her 16 rivals when making all in the hands of Frankie Dettori to give Wesley Ward a third win in the 5f juvenile fillies feature.
Mark Cranham (racingpost.com/photos)

"Despite doubts about the draw and the ground, Lady Aurelia travelled strongly throughout and had the race in the bag even before kicking in the turbo at the furlong pole to streak away from French runner Al Jahrah.

"The success was the second in two days for Lady Aurelia's sire Scat Daddy who was also responsible for Caravaggio, winner of the Group 2 Coventry Stakes."  More at source

WESLEY WARD STABLE TOUR - click here
"Wesley Ward became the first U.S-based trainer to saddle a winner at the prestigious Royal meeting when he scored a double in 2009.

"He has gone on to win a further four races in the last three years, including a brace in 2015 courtesy of Acapulco and Undrafted, who are both back for more glory this year.

"Ward, 48, a former champion apprentice rider in the U.S, returns to Royal Ascot with seven scheduled runners in 2016."

Gold-Fun settling in for Diamond Jubilee S

SIMENON
I would like to pay special tribute to a very special horse running in the Queen Alexandra Stakes on Saturday. His name is Simenon, a hard knocking horse if there ever was one. He doesn't have a stellar racing career, having started 42 times (35 in the flat) and finding the winner's circle only 7 times, with 4 places and 6 shows, and winning in US Dollars just over $803,000.  Not bad, especially when you consider that he has assembled this record racing all over the world:  GB/IRE/ AUS/ JPN/ HK/UAE. His best achievement as far as graded stakes is probably in the Grade 1 Gold Cup in 2013, when he came in second behind the Queen's horse, Estimate.

But one of his most remarkable achievements occurred during the year of Frankel and Black Caviar's appearances at Royal Ascot in 2012. But for those two stars grabbing all the headlines, what Simenon did at Royal Ascot that year might have put him in a bigger spotlight. He forever endeared himself to me, though. On the first day of Royal Ascot, Simenon ran and won the Ascot Stakes, a 20 furlong affair, which is about 2.5 miles. Then, 4 days later, on the last day of Royal Ascot, he again ran and won the Queen Alexandra Stakes at 21.5 furlongs, about 2.7 miles! He is a true stayer of the old school!

So, on Saturday, in the final race of this year's Royal Ascot, at the grand old age of 9, Simenon will go to post in the Queen Alexandra.  TimeForm has picked Oriental Fox, but they give Simenon some respect at 12/1 with a chance to hit the board. Good luck, brave warrior! I will be rooting for you, and as always, please come home safe!

BELMONT STAKES 2016

Let's Go To The Races - June 9-11, 2016
This is a non-commercial blog

*****************************

Note: Content will be added daily thru Saturday

The Belmont Stakes Racing Festival officially begins Thursday, June 9, and will feature 19 stakes races over a three-day period with nearly $10 million in total purses.

BELMONT STAKES FESTIVAL: If you thought the Belmont Stakes was about 1 big race, you would be mistaken. It's about a new "Festival" that includes not only the $1.5 Million Grade 1 Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 11, but also has turned into a festival rivaling all racing in the U.S. not named Breeders' Cup! While there's no Triple Crown at stake this year, there is top class racing and purses totaling $10 Million, including 5 Grade 1 events, which are sure to attract some of the top horses in the U.S. On Saturday's big day alone, over $7.5 Million in purses, the largest 1-day in purses outside of the Breeders Cup in the U.S.

The 148th running of the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes (G1) will be the anchor of this year's three-day Belmont Stakes Racing Festival, featuring 19 stakes races and nearly $10 million in purses.
Belmont Stakes Week officially kicks off Saturday, June 4, and continues through Saturday, June 11, and features events for the whole family.

Belmont Stakes web site

MOVE OVER, EURO RACING! U.S. BRINGING BACK LONG-DISTANCE RACING!!
NYRA giving boost to long-distance racing!
There are five races carded at 1 1/2 miles or longer during this year’s festival: On Thursday, there is the $200,000 Belmont Coronation at 1 15/16 miles for turf fillies; the Friday card includes the $150,000 Rags to Riches at 1 1/2 miles for older fillies and the $300,000 Belmont Gold Cup at two miles (!) on the turf; and Saturday’s stakes include both the Belmont and the Brooklyn at 1 1/2 miles each.

This is a revolutionary lineup and one that could add a new facet to the sport. Long-distance racing is vexingly unfamiliar to most American racegoers, and races such as these will create opportunities for a new group of horses to shine and perhaps strengthen the breed by rewarding stamina as well as speed. It’s a welcome development.

THANK YOU, MR. PANZA!!!

Creator edges Destin to take Belmont
Trainer switch gave the race the pace needed for Creator to get the win for Asmussen. WinStar also owns the pacesetter, Gettysburg, and did the barn switch to take Pletcher off the hot seat with his owners of Destin, the second place finisher. Was a no-brainer decision by WinStar, I would think, but still, nice of all the parties to keep it friendly in the face of such an important race. As was expected, the race came down to Creator and Destin, and the pacesetter proved to be the difference in the outcome.  Asmussen basks in Belmont afterglow; Creator to get time off

Prix du Jockey Club

June 5th 2016
Chantilly
The Prix du Jockey Club is currently one of Europe’s premier events for three-year-olds and an eagerly awaited stage for breeders of three-year-old colts with a view to the supreme international test in the autumn, the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.  This course gives the thoroughbreds an ideal opportunity to showcase their speed and stamina, two of the standout qualities of the breed. Since its creation in 1836, the Prix de Jockey Club has revealed top class stallions as Lope de Vega, Le Havre, Lawman, Dalakhani, Montjeu.
