A quick reference tool meant to help the newer fan (like me!)  Note: Most links are current, however, some links update as of the Friday before Saturday race day. I usually start posting the cards for the weekend races on Wednesday afternoon. Up until the actual cards are available, I sometimes use Horse Racing Nation's "Stakes Tracker" for a 'probable' card.

HEADLINES:  PENNSYLVANIA DERBY - PARX: RATTLESNAKE BRIDGE will seek to move forward from his second in the Travers in Satuday's $1,000,000 Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby.  He will face challenges by RULER ON ICE, he early favorite, but some say TO HONOR AND SERVE is the horse to beat.  The GALLANT BLOOM H - BELMONT: POMEROY'S PISTOL will be the lone three year old filly in a field of her elders in the Gallant Bloom H on Saturday. The 6.5f  Grade 2 sprint for f/m will include multiple stakes winner TAR HEEL MOM and TAMARIND HALL. Pomeroy's Pistol is using the Gallant Bloom as a prep for the Breeders Cup Fillies and Mares Sprint.  KENT STAKES - DELAWARE PARKDenied a sweep of Arlington Park's Mid-America Triple by a strong European contingent in the August 13 Secretariat S. (G1), WILLCOX INN (Harlan's Holiday) still rates as one of the leading three-year-olds on grass in the U.S. The Mike Stidham trainee can reaffirm that view Saturday in the $250,000 Kent S. (G3) at Delaware Park, which is scheduled at nine furlongs on the turf.  KENTUCKY CUP - TURFWAY: The Kentucky Cup features two-time Grade 1 hero GENERAL QUARTERS (Sky Mesa) and Grade 2 winner WORKIN FOR HOPS (City Zip), but neither of them rates as the morning-line favorite. That distinction goes to the Mike Maker-trained BARYSHNIKOV (Empire Maker), who has been tabbed as the slight choice at 3-1 to earn his first graded victory. BLUEGRASS CAT JUVENILE - TURFWAY PARK: In the Juvenile division, HANSEN will be looking to duplicate his spectacular debut on September 9 which he won by 12+ lengths. SELENE STAKES - WOODBINE: Never a factor in the Alabama Stakes (gr. I) one month ago, Queen's Plate winner Inglorious gets back on Woodbine's Polytrack for the $250,000 Selene Stakes (Can-III) Sept. 25.  Full cards, more races, news and other details listed below.

Sensational!

My commentary on the Garden City:  I totally disagree with the commentators at the end of the Garden City race where they said it was not the jockey's fault in the Lake Placid, and they were unwilling to give credit to Javier's handling of the Garden City race. Early on, Tom Durkin’s call was Winter Memories was 3 or 4 lengths from the front, then he noted she had lost a few positions. Javier deliberately slowed her down and dropped her toward the back of the pack...he wasn't going to make the same mistake getting her bottled up in mid-pack as Jose did. I think Javier did a masterful job of not panicking, taking her to the outside and then letting her talent take over. IMHO, Jose (Lezcano) could have done the exact same thing in the Lake Placid race, but instead he chose to keep her mid-pack and it allowed others to control her fate. I give total credit to Javier for this one. And he rewarded her with a hand-ride to the finish. That was just beautiful!

Thoroughbred Times

by Fred A. Pope
In the movie Field of Dreams, the theme was “If you build it, they will come.”  Before 1968, that theme built a lot of golf courses with events to lure professional golfers. At that time, golf was a facility-centric sport, meaning the facility where the sport is played controls everything, the product, the price, distribution, and marketing.  Read more...

Pope, a determined Lexington, Ky., advertising executive, racing commentator, and iconoclast, issued another lengthy commentary on the state of the game this week – this one taking up six pages of single-spaced copy on a PC printer – continuing his decades-long effort to convince racing it is following the wrong road.  Read more...
