William Travers’ name was already attached to what has become the oldest and most famous stake at Saratoga Race Course before his horse won the inaugural running 150 years ago.

The fledgling Saratoga Association, with Travers as its first president, opened its new race course on Aug. 2, 1864. The racing experiment of 1863 had been a huge success, and the association promptly purchased land across the street - the site still in use today - and built a one-mile track and viewing stands.

At 11:30 a.m., racing commenced with the Travers Sweepstakes for 3-year-olds carrying a $1,000-added purse that totaled $2,500. After one false start, the 1 ¾-mile race with a field of five was won by Kentucky, owned in partnership by John Hunter, George Osgood, and Travers. At a track that would become known as the “Graveyard of Favorites,” on this day the third choice in the wagering easily defeated favored Tipperary.

Long the marquee event of the Saratoga season, the Travers will be contested for the 145th time on Aug. 23. A field of 10, led by Belmont Stakes hero Tonalist, Jim Dandy victor Wicked Strong, and Haskell winner Bayern, the morning-line favorite, will vie for the winner’s $750,000 share of the stakes-record $1.25-million purse. Read more at source...

ARLINGTON MILLION DAY headlines the racing action on Saturday, with 3 Grade 1 races at Arlington Park, including the $1,000,000 ARLINGTON MILLION, the ALABAMA at Saratoga, and the DEL MAR OAKS, at Del Mar.

Arlington Festival of Racing  ARLINGTON MILLION DAY - PREVIEW
Irish invader Adelaide has been installed as the 8-5 favorite versus eight three-year-old rivals in Saturday's Grade 1, $500,000 SECRETARIAT, one of four major turf races that comprise Arlington's International Festival of Racing. Ryan Moore will be in to ride the Galileo colt for trainer Aidan O'Brien, who will also send out stakes-placed maiden winner Belisarius, a 20-1 morning line outsider in the 1 1/4-mile affair.

The second running of the $400,000 AMERICAN ST. LEGER, a 1 11/16-mile stayer test inaugurated in 2012, drew a field of 11 long-distance specialists including defending champion Dandino.  Read more...

The morning-line odds reflect the competitive nature of Saturday's Grade 1, $750,000 Beverly D. Stakes at Arlington, with the early favorite listed at 7-2 and the highest odds of 30-1 belonging to a filly who just missed by a neck in the local prep.  Read more...

GRADE 1 ALABAMA STAKES
The Alabama, run for the first time in 1872, is the longest running stakes race for 3-year-old fillies in the United States.  Ten Things You Should Know about Alabama Stakes

Nine sophomores fillies have been entered in Saturday's Grade 1, $600,000 Alabama at Saratoga, but STOPCHARGINGMARIA is the likely favorite off a five-length romp in the Coaching Club American Oaks last out.

The Todd Pletcher trainee dropped her season opener at Gulfstream Park in the Davona Dale, and could only manage fourth in the Fantasy at Oaklawn Park two weeks later. It wasn't long, though, before the Tale of the Cat filly showed her true colors when rallying for a neck victory in the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes at Pimlico, her first win since a neck score in the Demoiselle in her juvenile finale.  Read more...
