LOOKING BACK AT THE SANTA ANITA HANDICAP 1987. Ferdinand, on his way to being Horse of the Year, gets beaten by Broad Brush in the Big 'Cap of 1987 by a scant nose in a photo. Ferdinand would go on to win the Hollywood Gold Cup, the Goodwood, and the Breeders Cup Classic that year. In the 1988 renewal, the great Alysheba held off Ferdinand in a battle to the wire to win by 1/2 a length.
1982 - John Henry - The old gelding would win back-to-back editions, 1981-82, the second via a DQ of Perrault
1979 - Affirmed - Set speed record 1:58.6 (still stands).

Epic Rematch for 2014 Santa Anita Handicap

Wrap-up last weekend
The New York troupe of would-be Kentucky Derby players has a boffo hit on its hands.  Undefeated Samraat bested fellow New York-bred Uncle Sigh for the second time in Saturday's $500,000, Grade III Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct, cementing a rivalry that, with luck, will spice up this year's Run for the Roses. But watch out for a supporting player who could steal the show.

Florida and Kentucky also contributed fascinating plot twists to the Kentucky Derby script during the weekend. And, back in New York, 7-year-old Strapping Groom continued a plot development so unlikely it might have a hard time finding a stage.

In Dubai, two evenings of racing were needed this week to sort out contenders for the upcoming Dubai World Cup night.Let's start with Act 1, Scene 1: We hear the call to the post as the horses enter stage right onto the track at the Big A.  Read more...

GLOBE TROTTING SIMENON RUNNING AT MEYDAN SATURDAY

Saturday's Meydan carnival feature, the G3 Nad Al Sheba Trophy, has drawn a handful of quality stayers to duke it out over 2,810 meters (about 1 3/4 mi) of Meydan turf.

Simenon (Ire) (Marju {Ire}) makes his first start as a 7-year-old off a globe-trotting 2013 campaign that saw him jetset from England to Australia, Japan and Hong Kong. A fast-finishing second in the G1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, Simenon filled the same position in York's G2 Lonsdale Cup before embarking on an Australian campaign that saw him check in third in the G2 Herbert Power S. and fourth in the G1 Melbourne Cup. Simenon finished 13th, beaten just 3 1/2 lengths, in the G1 Japan Cup Nov. 24, and was last seen finishing fifth, beaten four lengths, in the G1 Hong Kong Vase Dec. It's been a while since he made it to the winner's circle, but he tries every time, and he has been close a time or two recently.  I recall one of the most amazing Royal Ascot accomplishments ever.  It almost didn't get noticed because of the two super stars, Frankel and Black Caviar, took most of the attention that year.  In any other year, Simenon's feat would have been headlines! The 2012 Ascot Stakes and 4 days later, the Queen Alexandra Stakes,  1 1/2 miles and 1 3/4 miles!  Video 2012 Ascot Stakes Replay   Queen Alexandra Stakes 6-22-12 Replay 4 days later! In each he won by more than 5 lengths!  Simenon, Stayer Extraordinaire!!!  Good luck in Meydan!
