FLASH!  FRANKEL'S LITTLE BROTHER TAKES THE BRITISH CHAMPION STAKES!

 *********************************

From U.S., to Canada, to Australia, to Great Britain, and Japan
Time Ordered Races / Entries - Printable file

WEEKEND RACING, PRIMARILY OVERSEAS: With the lull before our own Breeders Cup coming up, the top class racing will take place outside the U.S. this weekend, but there are a couple of races in the U.S. that might be of interest. First on Friday, Rosalind runs in the G3 Pin Oak Valley View at Keeneland (a friend of mine has an interest in Goldy Espony also in this race). Then on Saturday, the Grade 2 Lexus Raven Run at Keeneland has several 3 yr old fillies whose sires are of... interest: Street Sense (2 entries), A.P. Indy, Tapit, Flatter, Birdstone, Speightstown (2 entries).

Also in the U.S. will be the biggest day of American hunt races at Far Hills, New Jersey. See more info below.

In our own backyard, on Sunday, our Canadian friends will be celebrating the running of the PATTISON CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL. Brown Panther (the Irish St. Leger winner), Big Blue Kitten (Kitten's Joy), and Hillstar (another British invader, to be ridden by Ryan Moore, trained by Sr. Michael Stoute) head a field of ten.

The biggest races, however, are taking place overseas: Saturday, AUSTRALIA'S G1 CAULFIELD CUP, one of the lead-up races to the Melbourne Cup; GREAT BRITAIN, BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS. Sunday: JAPAN's G1 SHUKA SHO, the final leg of the Japan Fillies Triple Crown. Due to the time difference for Australia and Japan, it will be easier to catch the replays later in the day.

There are some races around the U.S. for state-breds in Maryland, New York,  Oklahoma, and West Virginia.  Check out any races you might have an interest in at BloodHorse racing index

BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS - SATURDAY OCTOBER 18

The BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS can be seen in the U.S. starting Saturday morning at 8:45 a.m. New York time, with the two key races -- the QE II at 10:30 ET, and the Champions Stakes at 11:05 a.m. The race at 8:45 a.m. is the Long Distance Cup, which will feature the Queen's Estimate in what could be her last race. Despite many of the biggest stars being ruled out for conditions, injury or retirement, Cirrus des Aigles, the 8 year old wonder gelding, is expected to be in the lineup for the Champions Stakes, along with Noble Mission (Frankel's brother), Al Kazeem, and Ruler of the World. Conditions at Newmarket are expected to be "testing" (wet!). More to come!

IT'S TREVE!

Treve and her jockey, Theiry Jarnet

Two time Arc winner - Treve

TREVE!  2014 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe

TREVE!  2013 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe 10-6-2013 - Longchamp

Update:  Dec. 22, 2014:  Was this the greatest training performance of 2014?
Imagine for a moment you are Criquette Head-Maarek at Longchamp just before 3:30 on the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 5. Now try to feel the pressure you are under.

Here’s a little help. At the same place 12 months earlier, you were the queen of racing, feted and celebrated, euphoric and triumphant, after Treve’s astonishing five-length demolition of a field of superstars in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Things have changed quite a bit since then.

in Chantilly. Photo: RacingFotos.com

So majestic had been the 3-year-old filly’s season – unbeaten and hardly tested in four starts, three of them at G1 – that she was officially crowned world champion (jointly with the Australian sprint titan Black Caviar) in the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings. The panel, including experts from every major jurisdiction, agreed there was no finer racehorse on Earth. Treve in 2013 had been better than Wise Dan, better than Orfevre, better than Novellist, better than Animal Kingdom.

Her owner, Qatar’s Sheikh Joaan Al Thani and his Al Shaqab Racing, decided Treve should stay in training to try to win the Arc for a second time (a feat not achieved since Alleged 36 years ago).
And then it started to unravel.   Read more at source...

CAN SUNDAY SILENCE BRING THE COVETED ARC TROPHY HOME TO JAPAN THIS YEAR?

If the Japanese are to ever get that coveted Arc win, it likely will be Sunday Silence who will take them there.  "...what had changed in the 1980s and ‘90s was the nature and quality of the Japanese Thoroughbred in an era when the mighty yen could buy almost any stallion it wanted. And what changed after that was the arrival in Japan of Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Sunday Silence, whose impact on the class of the Japanese herd was transformative."  Read article
Sunday Silence

Since 2006 through 2013, the Japanese have had 10 entries, with all save one having Sunday Silence in their first or second generation.  They are getting closer to victory, with two horses winning second (Orfevre, 2012 & 2013; Nakayama Festa in 2010).  There had been entries dating back to 1969, however, none until recent years has had a serious chance at even getting close.  That Sunday Silence has had a profound influence upon the Thoroughbred in Japan is not in question.

This year, Japan is fielding 3 entries:  Just A Way, Gold Ship, and Harp Star (filly).  All have Sunday Silence in their second generation back.  Just A Way has been ranked as the world's best racehorse by Longine's for several months in 2014.

Hopes have been dashed, and the Japanese take it hard when they have come up short.  In 2006, when Deep Impact ran, it is estimated that more than 5,000 Japanese fans made the trip to France, and no less are expected this year.

So, what shall it be? If it happens this year, there will be a big, black stallion looking down, with a hint of a smile (and only a slight smirk for all those American breeders who turned their backs on him).  With nearly $1 Billion in progeny earnings to his credit, Sunday may well consider it just another day at the office, but not to the island of Japan.  It will erupt like one of the many volcanos the small island is noted for.  Regardless of who you are rooting for in the Arc, if Japan takes the trophy, we can all celebrate.
A look at the three entries for the Arc on Sunday, Oct 5

Keeneland unveils its new dirt track, as well as opening its Fall meet with 6 Grade 1 races this weekend.  Wise Dan, the grand old man, faces a stiff test in the Shadwell Mile on Saturday.    Keeneland meet opens with rich stakes and new dirt surface  Last of the Win and You're In Breeders Cup races this weekend.

Kingston Hill in perfect shape for his run at history in the Arc
In the 94-year history of the Qatar Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe, France’s premier race has yet to be won by that season’s St Leger winner but that did not stop Roger Varian putting up a convincing argument on Thursday for a good showing from this year’s Doncaster hero, Kingston Hill, on Sunday.

There are, of course, “lies, damned lies and statistics”. Not many Leger winners ever try to follow up at Longchamp and it is perhaps worth remembering that the last dual winner of the Arc, Alleged, was runner/-up to Dumferline in the 1977 Leger before the first of his two famous victories.  Read more at source
