Not a race, it's a monument!

IT'S GONNA BE A WILD AND BUMPY RIDE!

With no fewer than 17 Grade or Group 1 races this weekend, including 5 at Santa Anita, 3 at Belmont Park, 1 in Japan, 1 in Australia, 7 at Chantilly for Arc weekend, it will be a challenge to even watch replays of some of these contests. Robert Kieckhefer with UPI has kindly summarized the whole ball of wax for us, and for the wrap-ups for both days I can highly recommend the Thoroughbred Daily News (www.thetdn.com) which will provide details on all the results for both the U.S. and around the world, which coverage includes great video replay links. This will be the biggest collection of Grade and Group 1 activity outside the upcoming Breeders Cup in November!

Here you find a list of all the races with links to check the cards and my printable time ordered list of races and entries for many of the contests. There will also be some TV coverage, for those with access to NBCSN, TVG, and live streaming will be available via TwinSpires.com, XBTV.com.

First stop though is Robert Kieckhefer's column, out today for an overview.  UPI Weekend Racing Preview

ARC: Postponed heads 16 runners remaining in Arc reckoning
Handicapping the Arc

Japan gets ready for the Arc with Makahiki
Jockey Yuichi Fukunaga :"Victory in the Arc de Triomphe is the dream of Japan and goal of the Japanese people."  Orfevre finished runner-up in both 2012 and 2013, the first defeat by unconsidered outsider Solemia producing this piece of YouTube gold. Now that's pain.

Not to be daunted though, the next challenger steps up to plate on Sunday, and according to some, Makahiki represents the country's best-ever chance of success - and considering how close the likes of El Condor Pasa, Nakayama Festa and Orfevre came, this is clearly a matter for any self-respecting punter to be considering closely. TDN: Through Highs and Lows, Dettori endures
"I didn't really understand what had happened until I opened the door to pick up the newspapers the next morning, wearing a T-shirt and underpants, and found four cameras and 10 journalists waiting there," he says. "It was my Rhys Ifans moment, in [the film] Notting Hill. Then when I opened the papers I found I was all over the front pages. The bookmakers had lost 40 million, I was moving the stock market, there were punters making millions It was only then that I understood what I'd achieved."  Read more at source

2015:  Golden Horn, ridden by Lanfranco Dettori, took the laurels in the year’s most prestigious horse race in front of 60,000 racegoers.

Day in History 'Magnificent Seven' Heaven Sent for Proud Frankie Dettori   "Myself, Willie Carson, Alex Russell and Sir Gordon Richards had now won six in a day. In 320 years of horse racing I was one in four." Then No. 7 happened and he sat above all the rest! Sept. 28, 1996, Frankie Dettori, ran the table at Ascot and broke a record with 7 wins in one day.

Trivia Question: 7 winners Dettori rode that day: Wall Street, Lochangel, Diffident, Mark of Esteem, Decorated Hero, Fatefully, Fujiyama Crest!

ARC DAY WRAP FROM BRISNET

Arc Day postscripts: the O'Brien trifecta & the Breeders' Cup
Kellie Reilly reviews Sunday's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1), its undercard, and the Breeders' Cup implications from all the action at Chantilly.

The impending showdown in this year's Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) has Ed DeRosa drawing comparisons with the 2002 renewal.

Vance Hanson has several takeaways from Super Saturday I, comparing California Chrome's winning style to Swaps and thinking Stellar Wind might want to take a peek at the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1).

Noted handicapper Michael Beychok prevailed in the Breeders' Cup's Bet Like No Other wagering promotion over the weekend with several astute plays.

Found tops O'Brien trifecta in Arc de Triomphe
Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) queen Found added another feather to her cap on Sunday when leading home an Aidan O'Brien-Galileo trifecta in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) at Chantilly in France. Just in behind the talented four-year-old were stablemates and fellow Coolmore-owned Highland Reel and Order of St. George.

Scott Shapiro discussed who he thought were the winners and losers on Santa Anita Park's Breeders' Cup Challenge Saturday.

WARD: Lady Aurelia could run 'best-ever race'
Trainer Wesley Ward believes his unbeaten juvenile filly Lady Aurelia just might run of the best race of her young career in the Connolly's Red Mills Cheveley Park Stakes (Eng-I) Sept. 24 at Newmarket.

The bay filly posted a Sept. 17 workout at Newmarket, bolstering Ward's confidence ahead Saturday's race.

"Lady Aurelia worked great on the Rowley Mile (Saturday) and is ready to run her best ever race," said Ward. "I have a lot to thank my 'assistant trainer' Frankie Dettori for! He's the only person to have ridden her since she came over from France after the Prix Morny, and I'm really excited to have such interaction race-to-race from the world's greatest jockey.

Lady Aurelia could face up to nine rivals in the Cheveley Park Stakes, including Jaber Abdullah's Frankel filly Queen Kindly, winner of last month's Lowther Stakes (Eng-II) at York for trainer Richard Fahey, as well as Aidan O'Brien-trained Brave Anna and Roly Poly, both Kentucky-bred daughters of Claiborne Farm sire War Front  , North America's current leading sire of 2-year-olds (Scat Daddy is second on the list).   Read more at BloodHorse

Summary:  In North America,  the emphasis is on grass racing with the biggest purses offered at Kentucky Downs and Laurel Park's greensward on full display.

No Grade 1s in North America, but plenty of top class racing overseas.

Saturday is Super Derby day at Louisiana Downs and British Columbia Derby day at Hastings Park.

Best place to get an overview of the racing landscape from Kentucky to Great Britain to Ireland and to France, plus check the action in Australia is the UPI Weekend Preview

TURF, TURF AND MORE TURF!
Some distance racing, not just overseas, but here in the Colonies and in Canada.

If you like Turf, if you like long distance racing, an action packed couple of days of racing awaits in North America, Across The Pond and on the Continent!

Kentucky Downs is a Thoroughbred horse racing track located on the border between Kentucky and Tennessee, in the city of Franklin, Kentucky, just off Interstate 65. It is unique among American tracks in that it is a European-style course — its surface is all turf (grass) instead of dirt, and it is not oval in shape.

Da Big Hoss, the defending champ, rides a three-race winning streak and is the early pick for  Saturday's $600,000, Grade III Kentucky Turf Cup at Kentucky Downs at 1 1/2 miles.  He won the Grade III American St. Leger at Arlington in his last start.

Kentucky Downs Track Layout
Conventionally known as a “European style” track, the Kentucky Downs course is not only irregulary shaped, but features a number of small rises and dips as opposed to the more common flat-racing surface. This type of surface is frequently referred to as "undulating".

Built on the site of a historic, colonial 'dueling grounds' Kentucky Downs features turf racing only on one of the most unique courses in North America. The track was originally designed for steeplechase racing, and still holds a number of steeplechase races throughout the season.

Kentucky Downs enjoys full fields, Instant Racing
If simulcast players want full fields to bet, Kentucky Downs in Franklin, Kentucky, will fill the bill. The track races only five days, but on opening day on Saturday, 189 horses were entered in 10 races. That is not a misprint.

Horses go where the money is. The Kentucky Downs condition book is full of cash for horsemen. It includes purses of $130,000 for maiden special weights and $140,000 for first-level allowance horses. That is insane.

The purse account has swelled to where more than $7 million will be paid out for the five-day meet this year. But that alone is not the sole reason for its success.

Kentucky Downs officials have lowered takeout and fine-tuned their betting menu to earn the top ranking of the Horseplayers Association of North America for the past few years. Rather than pooh-pooh the HANA rankings, Kentucky Downs has used HANA as a sounding board for what horseplayers want.

Kentucky Downs will be open for three more days — Saturday, Sunday and Thursday. You will be fascinated by the European-style turf racing. The turf course is a 1 5/16-mile kidney-shaped course with slight undulations. If a horse isn’t dead fit, it isn’t winning. There is no dirt racing, either.

No lead is safe at Kentucky Downs. The stretch seems to go on forever, so it’s important for a jockey to save some horse for the final furlong. Favorites historically do not do well there, which should make simulcast horseplayers happy. Read more at source

Laurel Park Turf draws 200 Nominations
Laurel Park's Turf Festival, highlighted by five stakes worth $500,000 on Laurel's world-class turf course Saturday, Sept. 10, attracted more than 200 nominations.

The Turf Festival, which features $575,000 in total stakes purses, kicks off Laurel's lucrative fall season featuring 32 stakes (four graded) with purses of $3.25 million. Laurel's fall season begins Friday. First race post time will be 1:10 p.m.

The Laurel Turf Festival will also play host to the Hops & Horses Beer Festival featuring more than 100 beers, a Beer Pong tournament, a Sam Adams Hoisting competition and live music. Read more at source

Louisiana Downs - Super Derby Day
Saturday is Super Derby day at Louisiana Downs and British Columbia Derby day at Hastings Park.
Saturday's $400,000 Grade III Super Derby at Louisiana Downs attracted seven. Ohio Derby winner Mo Tom is the 7-5 morning-line pick.

Emerald Downs Derby winner Opportunistic headlines Saturday's $150,000 (Canadian) Grade III British Columbia Derby at Hastings Park
