AMERICAN PHAROAH TOP RATED HORSE IN THE WORLD AFTER HASKELL

THE BIG HORSE DOES IT....AGAIN!

Talk now is, where should he go next? My vote is only Grade 1 races should be considered. Let the money follow the horse, which it will. Baffert says unbelievably, he is getting better. He obviously loves his job. In the words of Penny Chenery, "LET HIM RUN"!

American Pharoah highest rated in the world by TimeForm
Mark Milligan, Timeform’s handicapper for American racing, commented: “The thing with American Pharoah is that he makes everything look so easy. His high cruising speed and exceptional stride set him apart from his peers, and it probably isn’t going overboard to say he has a touch of the Frankel’s about him. I wouldn’t be at all surprised were he to finish the year having surpassed Cigar’s 138, and become Timeform’s most highly rated North American horse ever.”

Among US horses this century, Wise Dan (2012 and 2013), Point Given (2001) and Curlin (2008) all achieved annual ratings of 134. The fillies Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra earned ratings of 131 and 130 respectively in 2009 and would have received an additional sex allowance when competing against males.

IT'S THE HASKELL AND AMERICAN PHAROAH BRINGING HORSE RACING TO THE FORE!

For most fans of horse racing, American Pharoah has brought some good news for a change to a sport that seems to be beleaguered with negative press. It is refreshing to browse the racing news each day and find that American Pharoah seems to be everywhere, spreading his own brand of sunshine and happiness. We all are well aware of the shortcomings of the sport, but for at least a little while, we can bask in the glow of having lived to see the 12th Triple Crown winner in history.

Lots of good racing over the next few days, including a Grade 1 race at Del Mar on Saturday, the Clement Hirsch will see BEHOLDER and WARREN'S VENEDA square off in the G1 Clement Hirsch; FROSTED, COMPETITIVE EDGE and TEXAS RED will meet in the G2 Jim Dandy; UNTAPPABLE, STOPCHARGINGMARIA, and TIZ WINDY in the G3 Shuvee.  And, of course, on Sunday, the return of AMERICAN PHAROAH in the G1 Haskell Invitational. For more details on racing in the U.S. as well as racing across the pond at Glorious Goodwood, see the UPI racing preview below.

Who could ask for more in a weekend of racing: Triple Crown champ American Pharoah returns, Solow at Glorious Goodwood, five graded stakes at Saratoga and another at Del Mar.  Oh, wait. There IS more. Lots more. The $750,000 West Virginia Derby highlights an eight-stakes card at Mountaineer. Beholder and Untapable, the top fillies of 2013 and 2014, are both in action. Woodbine has graded stakes action and Arlington has state-bred stakes as the International Festival of Racing looms just two weeks hence.
And in Canada, there will be no Triple Crown winner, eh?  Read more at source

The day and night that Arlington died
Thirty years ago today, July 31, marks an amazing episode in the annals of horse racing. It was the day and night that Arlington Park, the scene of historic races by the likes of John Henry, Citation, Secreariat, Whirlaway, Native Dancer, and scores of others, as well as the home of the first 7-figure purse for a single race, was turned into a fiery rubble. What followed over the next three weeks was nothing short of a miracle and a true example of American ingenuity and can-do spirit.

THE "KING GEORGE"

KING GEORGE PRODUCES THRILLING FINISH AND GUTSY CLUTCH VICTORY BY POSTPONED! Eagle Top briefly was in front in the last 100 yards, but Postponed would have none of it, sticking his nose in front at the wire, displaying bravery and determination where it counted.  The defections of Golden Horn and Flintshire in the King George opened the race up to produce one of the most thrilling finishes to the contest in years, with POSTPONED refusing to surrender to Eagle Top at the wire. A heart-stopping finish, and one sure to go down to rival the 1975 contest between Grundy and Bustino, which has often been referred to as the "race of the century" in the UK. The win by the son of Dubawi adds to the many other successes by this sire for the year.  Additional coverage by the UK Telegraph - click here  More of the story - click here   Full result - click here   Racing Post result with comments

From Wikipedia:  In 1975, "The Race of the Century" between Grundy and Bustino
It is Britain's most prestigious open-age flat race, and its roll of honour features some of the most highly acclaimed horses of the sport's recent history. The 1975 running, which involved a hard-fought battle to the finish between Grundy and Bustino, is frequently described as the "race of the century". Many of its winners subsequently compete in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, and a number go on to have a successful career at stud. The race is often informally referred to as the "King George".

An early look at the likely fields for Saratoga's opening weekend stakes
By: Kellie Reilly on July 19, 2015
In anticipation of Saratoga's opening weekend, NYRA has released the probables for Friday's Schuylverville (G3) and Lake George (G2), Saturday's Sanford (G3) and Diana (G1), and next Sunday's Coaching Club American Oaks (G1).

In the opening day Schuylerville for juvenile fillies, TONASAH will likely get another chance to compete against the top two from the June 4 Astoria, MOMENT IS RIGHT and DECKED OUT. I say another chance because TONASAH is the one who was set to make her career debut in the Astoria, only to run loose around Belmont Park and have to be scratched. The Todd Pletcher filly came back to wire a five-furlong maiden by 5 1/2 lengths. Pletcher is also expected to send out debut maiden winner POSITIVELY ROYAL.  Read more at source.

NEWS

American Pharoah blitzes bullet at Del Mar

The downside to all this hoopla over AP's latest workout is it is likely to chase off competition and any races he runs in probably will not give him much of a challenge. I hope good horses will step up and enter races he runs in, but it may take the Breeders' Cup before we get to see him run against top horses. Playing against time here, and, there's always a chance he could have a hiccup, with even a small setback calling a halt to his career sooner rather than later. Baffert will do his part, I think, with a lot of history behind him to guide him through this journey. He's not likely to make some of the mistakes that were made with Secretariat or Seattle Slew in their post Triple Crown race schedule. Another good thing in AP's favor, I think, is the fact that he hasn't had that heavy of a racing schedule (not downgrading the Triple Crown, just that as far as the number of races he has run in, he is the lightest raced TC winner by a lot of races.)

One of the great rivalries in recent years: BLIND LUCK and HAVRE de GRACE!
After 5 straight seconds, Blind Luck takes back the rivalry by a nose in the 2011 Del 'Cap! This was to be the last time they would meet. Turned out to be "one for the ages"!

Video replays of their other great meetings:
2010 Delaware Oaks - A nose separates them
2010 Alabama - Another thrilling finish - By a neck
2010 - Dixon Cotillion - This time tables are turned - Again, a neck separates them
2011 Azeri Stakes - Longest margin of victory for either horse over the other
In the 2010 Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic, neither filly won that one, but, Blind Luck finished ahead of Havre de Grace by 1

JULY 4TH WEEKEND
Four solid Grade 1 races plus some exciting undercard action this holiday weekend.

On SATURDAY in the U.S. the two main events are at Belmont Park:  the Grade 1 Belmont Derby and the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks Invitational, also a Win and You're In Breeders Cup race. On the Belmont undercard, PROMISE ME SILVER will be looking for redemption in the Grade 3 Victory Ride after a bad start and wide trip in the Acorn last out saw her perfect record fade away.

In the Grade 3 Dwyer at Belmont,TEXAS RED provides star power and makes his second start of the season, after just missing in the San Vicente in February to Lord Nelson. His other competition likely will be BLOFELD, whose only career loss has been in the last-out William Walker at Churchill Downs in April.

DIVISIDERO, BOLO meet in deep Belmont Derby
DIVISIDERO will try for a second straight stakes victory on the inner turf at Belmont Park in the $1.25 million Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes (gr. IT) July 4, while classic runner BOLO will ship in from the West Coast. In the deepest field of 3-year-old turf runners assembled in North America this year, Gunpowder Farms’ Divisidero will try to pick up his first grade I victory and add his fourth win in five starts in Saturday’s 1 1/4-mile turf race. The Kitten's Joy colt will have to earn that top-level victory, as the field includes top runners from throughout the country, as well as a pair of promising international runners. Read more at source

Classic winner TONALIST towers over Suburban
TONALIST will find himself in easier company July 4 than he did last time out, with only five to tackle and not another grade I winner in the bunch for the $500,000 Suburban Handicap (gr. II) at Belmont Park.  The 2014 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner was nearly victorious in the June 6 NYRA.com Metropolitan Handicap (gr. I), but fell victim to a career-best performance and brilliant closing run from Honor Code and wound up second by 3 3/4 lengths. The 4-year-old Tapit   colt will look to duplicate the winning form he demonstrated one start back for trainer Christophe Clement, winning the one-mile Westchester Stakes (gr. III) by 3 3/4 lengths over three others in his season debut. Read more at source

On Sunday, MAIN SEQUENCE is the class of a loaded United Nations
Champion Main Sequence will make his return to the Jersey Shore to defend his title in the $500,000 United Nations Stakes (gr. IT) at Monmouth Park July 5, starting for the first time since taking a March trip to Dubai and facing a stout lineup of accomplished contenders.  The 6-year-old Aldebaran gelding was last seen in the March 28 Longines Dubai Sheema Classic (UAE-IT) at Meydan, where he went three wide around the long far turn and had to settle for seventh going 1 1/2 miles. Now he'll return to 1 3/8 miles on the Monmouth lawn, looking to land not only his second consecutive victory in the United Nations, but an automatic berth in the Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT)—a race he won in 2014—as part of the "Win & You're In" Breeders' Cup Challenge. Read more at source

SUNDAY's fare will be a full day of racing, and will include the Canadian Classic, Grade 1 Queen's Plate at Woodbine, and the Grade 1 United Nations at Monmouth.  Some nice undercard action will feature the Grade 3 Salvator Mile, the Grade 2 Princess Rooney, the Grade 2 Smile Sprint, the latter two and the United Nations are Breeders Cup Win and You're In races.

RACE DAY heads loaded Salvator Mile
Matthew Schera's Race Day, winner of the Oaklawn Handicap (gr. II) and Razorback Handicap (gr. III) in consecutive graded scores for trainer Todd Pletcher, is the 123-pound highweight for the $150,000 Salvator Mile (gr. III) July 5 at Monmouth Park  The 4-year-old Tapit   colt will have Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez in the irons from post 8 in a field of 10 for the mile test, which attracted the likes of George and Lori Hall's old-timer Pants On Fire, Crossed Sabres Farm's grade II winner Valid, Fox Hill Farm's grade II winner Coup de Grace, and multiple grade III winner Bradester.  The Salvator Mile will be broadcast live by Fox Sports 1 along with the United Nations Stakes (gr. IT) beginning at 4:30 p.m. ET.  Read more at source

Queen's Plate field set for Sunday
TORONTO -- The post positions for the 156th running of the Queen's Plate was drawn this morning in suburban Toronto at Woodbine Racetrack. A field of 14, including one filly will tackle the mile-and-a-quarter journey around the Woodbine oval in the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. Read more at source

Also of note in the Smile Sprint is Alsvid (Officer), who defeated Work All Week when taking the Aristides by two lengths. The Chris Hartman-trained gelding brings a three-race win streak into the event after taking an allowance/optional claimer in March prior to a three-quarter length score in the Count Fleet Sprint H. (G3) about two weeks later.
Chris Landeros has been aboard for Alsvid's current win streak and retains the mount.
