American Pharoah: Finally! The One!

ONE OF THE BEST TO EVER LOOK THROUGH A BRIDLE -- HOLY BULL
With Sunday's Haskell and the upcoming Travers, it is appropriate to celebrate one of the greatest to put a nose through a bridle, HOLY BULL. Mike Smith and Tom Durkin recall the magic of the Bull!  As a 3 year old he did everything you could ask of a horse as a sophomore: He won the Travers S.(G1), Florida Derby (G1), Metropolitan H. (G1), Haskell Invitational H. (G1), Woodward S. (G1). Although he did not win the Kentucky Derby, he did sire a Kentucky Derby winner - Giacomo, ridden by the Bull's jockey, Mike Smith.

LEGENDS - JIM DANDY UPSETS GALLANT FOX 100/1 in 1930's Travers
When horses achieve greatness, or accomplish particularly memorable feats, it is customary for stakes races to be named in their honor. Across the country, there are races the bear the names of legends like Man o' War, Secretariat, Kelso, and Cigar; even more recent greats like Zenyatta, Rachel Alexandra, and Wise Dan are remembered with stakes races.
Every summer, Saratoga Race Course in New York hosts the Jim Dandy Stakes (gr. II), a major prep for the prestigious Travers Stakes (gr. I) later in the Saratoga meet. It is only fitting that the Jim Dandy Stakes is a prep for the Travers, since it was in the 1930 Travers that an unassuming 3-year-old chestnut colt pulled off one of the most astonishing upsets in the history of horse racing to ensure that his name would never be forgotten. “The launch of Saratoga Live on July 22 means that, for the first time, the best racing in America from the most historic venue will be broadcast to a national audience of more than 65 million homes. The prospect of reaching experienced horseplayers where they live, while expanding our ability to develop new fans, is something about which everyone at NYRA is extremely excited.”

While FS2 and Altitude will air only the Saratoga show, MSG+ will carry Belmont Park Live from Sept. 9 through Oct. 2 with a special presentation added on Oct. 22 for the track’s New York Showcase Day. Allevato is hopeful of adding more shows in 2017, and while Belmont Park Live and Saratoga Live might be television shows, they are also a hub for NYRA to make use of its other platforms, such as its HD mobile app.

SARATOGA

Questions abound for the 153rd Summer Saratoga commences Friday

On Friday at 1 p.m. (EDT), the 153rd summer of racing at Saratoga gets underway. Forty racing days of classy Thoroughbreds, champion trainers, and Hall of Fame jockeys will include 37 stakes races, 18 of them Grade 1, and a total of nearly $19 million in purses will be given away before the meet ends on Labor Day.

The Ortiz brothers have had a lock on the New York standings dating back to the winter of 2015, having won seven of the last nine meet riding titles in the state. Older brother Irad won his first Saratoga meet title last summer; can younger brother José get his this summer?

The nationally hot jock Florent Geroux will spend his first summer full-time at the Spa, as will the Midwest's Ricardo Santana Jr. Geroux's got five mounts for four trainers on opening day, Santana's got three, two for New York-based trainers.

Saratoga Opening Day Friday
Saratoga Preview focuses on general issues
History of Saratoga
Thoroughbred racing has no finer setting than Saratoga Race Course, which was opened over 150 years ago. Named one of the world’s greatest sporting venues by Sports Illustrated, the past comes alive in the historic grandstand every summer as fans experience not only the best in racing, but the unmatched ambience and charm of historic Saratoga Springs.

Already famous for its mineral baths, Saratoga held its first thoroughbred meet just a month after the Battle of Gettysburg. Staged by gambler, casino owner, ex-boxing champion and future Congressman John “Old Smoke” Morrissey and beginning on August 3, 1863, the four-day meet drew thousands of locals and tourists who saw Lizzie W. defeat Captain Moore in the best-of-three series of races.

Saratoga Springs is home to the National Museum of Racing, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC), the National Museum of the Dance, Skidmore College, and many art galleries. Resplendent in Victorian architecture, it also boasts Yaddo Rose Gardens, the Little Theatre at SPAC, the Saratoga Music Hall and the Foundation for Baroque Music. Nearby, Saratoga Battlefield in Stillwater is dedicated to “The Turning Point of the American Revolution,” while Ulysses S. Grant’s Cottage at Mt. McGregor is where the bankrupt former president and Civil War hero, wrote his memoirs and restored his family’s fortune.

DEL MAR

The San Diego Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in late July/early August at Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California. This Grade II race is open to horses, age three and up, willing to race one and one-sixteenth miles on dirt. It is considered the track's key prep race for its foremost attraction, the $1-million Pacific Classic Stakes
.
Inaugurated in 1937, it was first run on July 3 as part of the first-ever racecard at Del Mar Racetrack. Since inception it has been contested at various distances.

California Chrome and Dortmund are set to meet up in the San Diego Handicap on Saturday.

A LOOK BACK: REMEMBERING CIGAR - July 13, 1996
The day Cigar Equaled Citation's 16-race winning streak

THE INCOMPARABLE THE INVINCIBLE, THE UNBEATABLE CIGAR!! Prior to his historic "streak" of 15 straight wins, and before Cigar was to undertake to equal Citation's 16 race winning streak in Chicago, prior to that Cigar had had an undistinguished career mostly on the turf. In fact it was declared that he did not know how to win. Switched to dirt, he seemed to not know how to lose. The Streak began in October 1994 at Aqueduct in an Allowance race, culminating at the Invitational Ar...lington Citation Challenge, July 13, 1996. Embedded in the TDN article is a replay of the broadcast by CBS. You can skip to 11:30 on the tape to pick up the start of the race. You can also search at YouTube to watch Cigar's other history-making victories on his way to his 16 race winning streak, which included an amazing 10 grade 1 races, including the 1995 Breeders' Cup, the 1996 Dubai World Cup.   TDN: The Day Cigar rose to the challenge

The holiday weekend schedule finds important races as far afield as South Africa and Iowa, with Breeders' Cup qualifiers in Florida, graded stakes in New York and California, The Coral-Eclipse in England and the Queen's Plate in Canada.

Two of Saturday's sprint features at Gulfstream Park are qualifiers for this fall's Breeders' Cup World Championships at Santa Anita.

2015 Queen's Plate and Woodbine Oaks winner Lexie Lou is among the favorites for Sunday's $200,000 (Canadian), Grade II Dance Smartly Stakes for fillies and mares at Woodbine. The 9-furlongs event also drew Strut the Course and Heath among 11 starters. Read more

Sir Dudley Digges upsets Queen's Plate
The Ramseys got a lot of holiday cheer over the weekend with the success over seas in the Coral Eclipse of their top sire, Kitten's Joy's son Hawkbill taking the Grade 1 on Saturday, then on Sunday Sir Dudley Digges upsets in the Queen's Plate. Ramsey says they are going for the Canadian Triple Crown as he thinks Dudley can do it. Nothing Ken Ramsey says he wants to do should be discounted, as he has achieved about as much success as an owner/breeder could hope for over the years. His success is not limited to breeding top class horses, as he seems to also know how to buy a future winner. Dudley was purchased for $130,000 as a 2 yr old in training. Another "late bloomer", taking SEVEN TRIES to break his maiden.
