LET'S GO TO THE RACES -
JULY 9-10

1980 Kentucky Derby - Genuine Risk
A quick reference tool meant to help the newer fan (like me!)
Note: Most links are current, however, some links update as of the Friday before Saturday race day.

BIG DAY SATURDAY, JULY 9
Two big G1 races this weekend include the Hollywood Gold Cup, $500,000 G1 for 3 yo and up, and the Man O' War, $600,000 turf for 3 yo and up.

A filly will add to the interest of the Hollywood Gold Cup. Miss Match (Santa Margarita Invitational), who many think may be overmatched.  Add to this mix the cast of characters that were involved in the 12-minute stewards' inquiry in the Big Cap race Santa Anita H. in March:  Twirling Candy (The Californian), Setsuko (a bridesmaid in 2 G1s, a G2 and G3, and will be seeking a first graded stakes win) and Game on Dude, (Santa Anita H) who finished first.  They blamed the fiasco on Twirling Candy, who really got banged around, but a technical examination of who did what to whom revealed it was actually the winner, Game on Dude, who got out of his lane and bumped TC who bumped Setsuko.  Game on Dude got the win and no penalties were assessed against Twirling Candy, even though he was found to be at fault, because he finished so far back.  Here is a link to view the  race and the controversial stewards' inquiry:  Santa Anita H. - Stewards' Inquiry

Awesome Gem (Lone Star H) will be there to defend his title from 2010.  He beat Game on Dude and Flat Out (Suburban H) in the Lone Star Handicap, so he has a legitimate claim to favorite status, although that position will likely be held by Twirling Candy.  Awesome Gem will get 6 pounds from Twirling Candy, who will carry top weight of 122 lbs.

Gio Ponti (2009 and 2010 turf champion), will be trying to make it three-in-a-row in the Man O' War, while the UK's top trainer, Aidan O'Brien, is sending in Cape Blanco to try and stop the 2010 Turf champ.  These two last met in the Dubai World Cup last March, where Cape Blanco finished 4th in front of Gio Ponti.

WANT TO FOLLOW A PARTICULAR HORSE OR TRAINER?
Looking for a way to keep up with the horses, or a trainer?  Or, ever want to watch replays of races quickly and easily?  What's coming up today or this weekend?

You need to register - it's free....there are some pay type options, but all I have needed has been the "free stuff".

Click on "Handicapping & PPs", roll over to "Tools" and note there is a "Horse Watch" and a "Trainer Watch" on the drop down list.  I have entered several Horses to watch on the "Horse Watch" (you can even have it send you an email with updates, or you can check in and click on "Messages" and check out what is happening with your choice.  You can also write a short note (I usually drop in the horse's next race, when I know what it is). A few of my choices are Uncle Mo, To Honor and Serve (one of Bernrdini's colts), Dialed In, and Zazu.
