LET'S GO TO THE RACES - SEP 17-18

A quick reference tool meant to help the newer fan (like me!)  Note: Most links are current, however, some links update as of the Friday before Saturday race day. I usually start posting the cards for the weekend races on Wednesday afternoon. Up until the actual cards are available, I sometimes use Horse Racing Nation's "Stakes Tracker" for a 'probable' card.

BELMONT
Sep 17
Garden City (G1), $250,000g, 3yo f, 9f (turf), Race 9, 5:18 pm ET
Sensational!

My commentary on the Garden City:  I totally disagree with the commentators at the end of the Garden City race where they said it was not the jockey's fault in the Lake Placid, and they were unwilling to give credit to Javier's handling of the Garden City race. Early on, Tom Durkin’s call was Winter Memories was 3 or 4 lengths from the front, then he noted she had lost a few positions. Javier deliberately slowed her down and dropped her toward the back of the pack...he wasn't going to make the same mistake getting her bottled up in mid-pack as Jose did. I think Javier did a masterful job of not panicking, taking her to the outside and then letting her talent take over. IMHO, Jose (Lezcano) could have done the exact same thing in the Lake Placid race, but instead he chose to keep her mid-pack and it allowed others to control her fate. I give total credit to Javier for this one. And he rewarded her with a hand-ride to the finish. That was just beautiful!

HANGIN' WITH HASKIN
THE UNBEATABLE HORSE - Remembering the Fall of 1973
Haskin's back! This begins a series on Fall racing with a historical perspective. This column is about the "Giant Killer", the "unbeatable horse", Big Red, and "Penny's favorite horse", Riva Ridge. An insider's look into events of the fall of 1973 which saw the unbelievable upsets by one "unbeatable" horse of two of racings biggest stars.  BHorse: Hangin' with Haskin - The Unbeatable Horse

This is the 1973 Woodward, which at that time was run at 1 1/2 miles. I have been unable to find a video for the 1973 Jockey Club Gold Cup, which was 2 miles in 1973. Prove Out - 1973 Woodward - VIDEO

Horse Profile:
Emerald Beech
From BloodHorse, Sept. 14, 2011
In the manner of the stalwarts of old, Emerald Beech has taken her time about getting good. She did not start at all at 2 and managed only a maiden win from five starts at 3; at 4, she placed twice from five more starts. If owner George Strawbridge Jr. had seen fit to retire her at that point, no one would have criticized him. Instead, patience and the wizardry of veteran trainer Jonathan Sheppard have paid off for Strawbridge's Augustin Stable, as Emerald Beech has now won four straight races this year after finishing second in her season opener.  Read more...
