THE BEST HORSE AROUND? IT'S CHROME!
The GI Pacific Classic was not supposed to be easy for California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit). The opposition included last year’s winner in the superstar mare Beholder (Henny Hughes) and a serious race horse in Dortmund (Big Brown). In Hoppertunity (Any Given Saturday) and Imperative (Bernardini) there were still two more millionaires in the race. The wise guys were jumping off the Chrome bandwagon, many of them predicting that this would be the occasion where we would get his comeuppance.

Instead, we saw what was arguably the best performance ever by a great race horse. Songbird, Beholder, Tepin (Bernstein), Frosted (Tapit), Flintshire (Dansili {GB}), Exaggerator (Curlin), they are all wonderful horses, some of the best we’ve seen in a long time. But none of them belong in the same sentence as California Chrome. What a horse, indeed.  Read more at source

CALIFORNIA CHROME AND VICTOR ESPINOZA PLAYING WITH RIVALS IN PACIFIC CLASSIC

"To put in to perspective what the Mexican jockey achieved by taking California Chrome’s career earnings to a monstrous US$13,252,650 (Dh48,671,682), the Dubai World Cup-winning combination became just the third horse and jockey to win from the inside post position in the 26-year history of the Grade 1 contest.

"California Chrome was the first horse since General Challenge in 1999 to emerge from the inside, but it was how Espinoza flummoxed his fellow riders that will live long in the memory.

"As soon as the gates opened, Espinoza gunned California Chrome to the lead and he then drifted at least three off the rail."    Read more at source

Quotes from what they said about California Chrome's performance in Pacific Classic:

Gary Stevens: “I was hoping for the same kick she had last year. She kicked, and he opened up,” Stevens said. “When he opened up, I knew I’d have to save something for the last eighth if I wanted to be second. Victor was playing with us. I don’t think he let him run. That’s kind of scary.”

Gary Stevens: "Beholder’s jockey, Gary Stevens, said he was hoping Dortmund’s trainer, Bob Baffert, would have told jockey Rafael Bejarano to put pressure on California Chrome from the start.
“Victor was loaded,” Stevens said. “He ran a great strategic race. What a horse. California Chrome is as good as I’ve ridden against.”

Bob Baffert:  "Baffert said the race was “over the first eighth of a mile,” when jockey Victor Espinoza aggressively sent California Chrome from his rail draw and secured the lead. “Victor put the shock and awe at the beginning. That was it,” Baffert said. Baffert said he’d wait a bit before deciding on a race schedule for Dortmund and Hoppertunity this fall. “My horses fired,” Baffert said. “The other horse was too good. He was the better horse. Sometimes you’ve got to say you got your ass beat.”

Art Sherman: "She [Beholder] was driving to catch him and I knew that if Victor had to get after him, he was just going to rebreak and pull away. What can you say about him? He's just a super horse. That's why he's the best horse in the country. Sherman added, "When you get a couple of horses [like California Chrome and Beholder] in the same race--when do you ever see that. The mare ran a hell of a race".

Richard Mandella: "No way I’m anything but proud of her,” Mandella said Sunday morning. “She beat some pretty nice horses. She ran well enough to win most Classics, but not that one. The winner ran awesome.”

Art Sherman: “He’s so much stronger. He’s in the best part of his career now,” Art Sherman, who trains California Chrome, said at his Del Mar barn on Sunday morning. “It’s kinda awesome to watch. “You’ve got the best horses in the country. These races are tougher,” Sherman said, comparing the current campaign to when California Chrome was 3. “I think he’s the best horse in the world, not that I might be biased.”

Mike Watchmaker:  "Simply put, California Chrome was monstrous Saturday. California Chrome had to break from the inside, and the whole world knows that he doesn’t like getting pinned down on the inside. So jockey Victor Espinoza did the very smart thing of sending California Chrome right to the front and getting him away from the rail."

Watchmaker:  "Dortmund couldn’t keep up this time, but Beholder tried every step of the way (and did not lose one iota of stature finishing second), and yet California Chrome just kept running away from her."

Watchmaker:  "Where California Chrome might pick up some extra points for his Pacific Classic effort – like he needs them – is speed did not look like it was carrying at all on Del Mar’s main track Saturday. In fact, California Chrome was the only front-running winner from the seven dirt races on the day. So he did what he did on a track that appeared tilted against the method he employed. Yeah, most impressive."

Richard Mandella:  Beholder’s trainer, Richard Mandella, was gracious in defeat.“I went over and told Art that he did a fabulous job with his horse,” he said. “He’s always been a great horseman. I’m just sorry it was at my expense.”

Songbird in a league of her own at Saratoga

“She is just amazing, and she keeps on getting better and better,” said [Mike] Smith, who won the Alabama each year from 1993 to 1995 with Sky Beauty, Heavenly Prize and Pretty Discreet. “We were running along a pretty good clip and I was kind of surprised that someone was going with her [Go Maggie Go] which was fine. We can’t always get an easy lead and she was comfortable going along down the backside and well within in herself. I knew she was going to run well.”

"Hollendorfer indicated that a start in the Sept. 24 GI Cotillion S., a race in which Havre de Grace turned the tables on Blind Luck, could be next for Songbird. She could square off there with Kentucky Oaks winner and fellow ‘TDN Rising Star’ Cathryn Sophia (Street Boss)."  Read more

QUOTES FROM SONGBIRD'S ALABAMA

#################################
Four Grade 1 races top the racing on Saturday, two at Saratoga and two at Del Mar: the Alabama will see SONGBIRD favored to keep her record perfect, bringing the filly her 10th score; of course the race everyone has been looking forward to see will be the Pacific Classic featuring the West Coast's top three: CALIFORNIA CHROME, DORTMUND, and the mare BEHOLDER. CATCH A GLIMPSE looks to keep her record perfect on turf in the  Lake Placid Stakes (G2) on Sunday.

Also on Saturday, 11 sophomore fillies will line up in the Del Mar Oaks (G1) and Flamboyant will seek a trifecta of Grade 2 victories in the Del Mar Handicap (G2). The Fourstardave Handicap (G1), rescheduled due to last Saturday's card being called off because of storms at Saratoga, features defending champion Grand Arch.

FROSTED! WIRE TO WIRE!!

Neil Latham, from American Thoroughbred
Zenyatta Slide Show from American Thoroughbred, by Neil Latham
Our girl has gotten world-wide attention once again, this time she has been enshrined and immortalized by an exquisite work of art by Neil Latham, "American Thoroughbred". We could have told Mr Latham that he would fall for "The Queen", and indeed he did, giving Zenyatta credit for providing the raison d'etre for his Magnus Opus, Mr. Latham had this to say:

"At that moment Latham knew that his journey had ended, he had captured the essence of the Thoroughbred. "All of my photographs portrayed the power and dominance of the breed, but it wasn't until Zenyatta that I was able to reveal the emotional, fragile side. It was the missing piece. I felt the finality and then a wave of sadness. I never wanted it to be over. It's hard to stop an obsession. But it seemed like there was nothing else to say, it had all been said with Zenyatta".

Yes, indeed, Zenyatta always has the "last word", and she is the "essence of the Thoroughbred." Yet, she is much more: Neil Latham's book has immortalized Zenyatta for those inside and outside the sport, as well, and in a strange way, I feel it validates how those of us who love this mare like no other and see her as the otherworldly creature that she is: We are not crazy.

CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN TO TEAM ZENYATTA FOR INDUCTION IN TO THE HALL OF FAME. CEREMONY AUG. 12.

LEGENDS: LADY'S SECRET - HORSE RACING'S IRON LADY
LADY'S SECRET, winner of the 1986 edition of The Whitney Handicap, another in the ABR "Legends" series.  In 1986, the year she was named Older Female and Horse of the Year, LADY's SECRET had 15 starts, winning 10, including the WHITNEY, and what has to be a record 9 GRADE 1s. She never failed to finish at least third in three other Grade 1 contests against males in the Met Mile, Philip H. Iselin Handicap and Woodward Stakes (2nd).

Six fillies have won the race: Black Maria (1928), Bateau (1929), Esposa (1937), Gallorette (1948), Lady's Secret (1986), and Personal Ensign (1988).

ESPOSA: THE SARATOGA SENSATION
Esposa after winning the Wilson Stakes at Saratoga
(Property of Blood-Horse Library)

ESPOSA: Another Saratoga sensation -- and a winner of THE WHITNEY, but one who is likely unfamiliar to most of us. One of the biggest stars of the 1930s, she definitely made her mark at Saratoga. ESPOSA, indeed was a star every bit the equal of those more recent and familar to us, including Goldikova, Zenyatta, Rachel Alexandra, Tepin, etc. and who routinely challenged and beat males.

Racing in the 1930s against a strong group of male horses that included Seabiscuit, War Admiral, and Discovery, Esposa held her own against all of them, and—on one memorable occasion—even defeated Seabiscuit. She won the 1937 Whitney, and in 3 more renewals of that race she came in second to Discovery twice, and to War Admiral, once. She was the Champion Handicap mare in 1937 and 1938.

She was so good and ran over a period of 7 years from 1934 through 1940, I marvel that her name isn't more well known. And maybe it is, but somehow she escaped my attention. To view a photo of Esposa with her first foal Esteem: http://www.ebay.ie/itm/231986241371

THE TALE OF ZENYATTA IS WORTH HEARING AGAIN AND AGAIN

Note: Zenyatta and the other Hall of Fame inductees in the Class of 2016 will be honored  in the special ceremony on Friday, August 12, 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 EDT.  2016 Hall of Fame Class

John Shirreffs calls it his Camelot, those days from late 2007 to late 2010 when he was the keeper of a flame that burned so brightly that it set the Thoroughbred racing world aglow with enthusiasm not seen since the sport’s Triple Crown heydays of Secretariat, Affirmed and Seattle Slew.

Referencing Camelot always triggers this: “One shining moment.” In John’s Camelot it was “one shining moment after another shining moment after another …” You know what’s coming. Those multiple moments revolved around the great race mare Zenyatta – 20 in all.

Along the way she won three Eclipse Awards as best older female in America, was acclaimed Horse of the Year in 2010, as well, and became the first – and still only - female to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic (2009). And during that time, she ran off 19 straight victories. In her final race, her attempt to repeat as Classic champion, she fell a head short after another of her signature dashes from last place. Even the loss, Shirreffs said, could have been one of her best races. Read more at source

Frosted tops Whitney, Mother Goose rematch in Test
A stirring 14 1/4-length winner of the Metropolitan H. (G1), Frosted was installed as the 3-5 morning line favorite over five rivals in Saturday's $1.25 million Whitney (G1) at Saratoga.
The $500,000 Test (G1) shares the spotlight with the Whitney on Saturday and the 7-furlong race features a rematch between the top three finishers from the July 2 Mother Goose (G1) at Belmont Park, Off the Tracks, Lewis Bay and Lightstream, respectively. The $200,000 Waya (G3) heads a trio of turf stakes on the same program.

At Del Mar, Monster Bea & Lucky Bryan could benefit from a speed duel in the $150,000 La Jolla H. (G3) and six juvenile fillies will square off in the $200,000 Sorrento (G2).

Wavell Avenue, the 2015 TwinSpires Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint winner, proved too much for her Shine Again rivals in Wednesday's $100,000 Shine Again at Saratoga.

Exaggerator, Stellar Wind shake things up in divisional title races Scott Shapiro notes from Del Mar that California Chrome is sure to be favored in the Pacific Classic (G1) over Beholder if the three-time champion mare runs.

At Saratoga on Monday, undefeated turf star Lady Eli worked in company with Sea Calisi, while trainer Rick Violette is pondering whether to enter Samraat in Saturday's Whitney (G1).

From late Sunday, Lord Nelson won as the even-money favorite in the Bing Crosby (G1) at Del Mar.

Ron Flatter took at look at the Haskell, talking about the pall cast over the race following American Pharoah's 2015 victory and then asking the question, "Who's the champ?" following Exaggerator's win. Teresa Genaro had the same thought and surmised the Travers (G1) might end up clearing the muddy waters.

American Pharoah dominated last year's Haskell, and last Sunday his full sister American Cleopatra scored an easy win in her debut at Del Mar.

Curalina seemed to relish the off-going at Saratoga last Sunday as the chestnut miss splashed home an easy winner of the Shuvee H. (G2).

Lady Shipman returned the winner's circle with an easy triumph in the Royal North (Can-G3) at Woodbine last Sunday.

Jim Dandy (G2) winner Laoban could rematch with third-placer Destin and Mohaymen in the Travers (G1) on August 27 at Saratoga.

American Cleopatra wasn't the only two-year-old to make a splashy debut, as juvenile Theory romped in his Saratoga debut on Saturday to earn a spot in the Hopeful (G1).
